Who are We?

Antiphon, conducted by John Roper, is a small chamber choir based in and around Hexham and the Tyne Valley.  The choir was founded in 2000 by Judy Lloyd, the choir's artistic director, to explore English and Continental music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Sample of our Singing

Repertoire has included the Tallis and White Lamentations, masses by Josquin, Dufay and Palestrina and Victoria's Requiem.  The choir generally sings a cappella, but for special occasions has also performed Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri cantatas with original poetry by Stan Beckensall, Handel's Dixit Dominus and works by Purcell including Love's Goddess Sure.

In recent years  the choir has undertaken collaborations with professional early music specialists and local composers to produce two new works for choir and community: the Cantata of the Creatures based on St Francis' hymn to creation and Northumbrian Fragments, a song cycle representing the lives of the colourful Saints of the Golden Age.  This project was created using Choral Ambition award funding from the BBC.

Keeping in touch
Would you like to be emailed about forthcoming events? We are happy to add you to our emailing database of supporters.  Please email with your details.

Concerts have also been organised on both a formal and informal basis in a variety of venues including private country houses and church halls, allowing the choir to extend its repertoire to folk songs, madrigals and modern sacred and secular works; to collaborate with instrumentalists and to reach audiences all over the county.

Do you sing?
We are a sociable bunch of around 20 members and we are always pleased to audition good singers who share our  love of early music, can sightsing well and hold a part. We practise on a Tuesday night in St John Lee church hall which is about 1  mile outside Hexham.

Since 2006 the choir has undertaken three continental singing holidays.  These began with a visit to Assissi where we sang masses by Byrd and Palestrina in the Basilica of St Francis of Assissi. In 2008 we went to Burgundy where we sang mass settings by Josquin, Dufay and Victoria in Vezelay Abbey, Auxerre cathedral and the Ho tel Dieu in Beaune. In 2011 Antiphon toured various churches in Bruges and Brussels singing a concert and two church services, including the Palestrina Mass, Viri Galilei on Ascension Day, Bruges' most celebrated festival of the year. We are also available to sing at weddings in the area, and special events.  Do ring or email  to enquire.
